SAILING YACHT CONVERSION TO ELECTRIC POWERED BOAT
Below is one of my favourite Perth sailing videos on a 420 I bought to teach my son sailing. After that, it sat on my front lawn for 13 years, so I converted it to an electric-powered fishing boat. I still have the mast, rigging, two sets of sails and a rudder if anyone is interested in buying them for a 420 high-performance sailing dinghy @ $770.
In September 2025, I saw a tiger shark longer than my little 4.20 metre sailing dinghy. Four samson fish chased a hooked skippy right to the boat. I guess the shark was hoping to eat the samsonfish rather than bite the transom off the yacht, where blood was coming out of the duck bill, billge water outlet valve.
The batteries of an electric outboard are a bit easier than rigging (and derigging) to get going out on the water to go fishing in Perth but not as fast and thrilling as hanging out on trapezes from a sailing boat. Nor do batteries have the same range as sail power unless I get more solar panels. Knowing energy can not be created or destroyed here’s the energy conversions.
Sun’s nuclear fusion > Light energy collected on my roof top solar panels and flexibe deck solar panel > electricity stored as chemical energy in two 12V 120mAh batteries in series to supply 24 volts to my cheap 44lb thrust electric outboard motor > kinetic energy. From Hillarys Boat Harbour, I took my Chez SCUBA diving friends sailing past Little Island to the 3 Mile Reef. For the first few years I feed my Lagoon Sailing Tour passengers on fish that I speared but during this sailing video, it was the first time I’d speared fish while using SCUBA. I thought it a bit unfair and haven’t done it since.
