About Perth, Western Australia

What is Perth famous for?

Perth is the capital of Western Australia and the only major Australian city on the Indian Ocean. The skyscrapers of the central business district (CBD) look over the Swan River, while the hilltop Kings Park, one of the largest inner-city parks in the world, looks over both the Swan River and the city skyline.

Perth is the interstate and international gateway to Western Australia’s pristine environment: some of the world’s best beaches, natural and man-made parks, and the Marmion Marine Park on the Sunset Coast, a wonderland of sea life just off the northern beaches.

Perth: the most isolated city in the world

Perth is often called the most isolated major city in the world. Settlers from many countries have come to live alongside Aboriginal Australians, creating a multicultural population that includes Europeans, Africans and Asians, with large Indian and Chinese communities. This website’s owner and author, Ben Grummels, arrived by boat from Europe at Fremantle in 1955.

Fremantle and other popular destinations such as Perth Beaches, Kings Park, the Swan Valley vineyards and the restaurants of Northbridge, with cuisines from all over the world, are good Perth places to visit, see and do things.

Greater Perth stretches about 100 kilometres from the satellite city of Joondalup in the north to Mandurah in the south. The two are connected by a frequent, modern train service that runs down the middle of the north–south freeway, with feeder buses linking the suburbs to each station. Perth’s wet winter is good for the stone fruit grown in the Perth Hills, which should be plentiful in the summer of 2026. Below is our 2026 list of Perth’s best tourist attractions, things to do and Perth businesses.

Moving to Perth: visas, jobs and the cost of living

Temporary residency visas are available for skilled migrants and for migrants who want to establish and manage a business or invest. Perth business brokers are ready to help investment migrants buy one of the Perth businesses for sale.

In 2026 there is a huge shortage of workers, so jobs in Perth are easy to find for skilled people. High living costs are an important consideration, though: food and accommodation in Perth are not cheap. The median weekly rent in early 2026 is approximately $700, and the 2026 Perth house price of Perth houses for sale is just under $1 million.

As a guide, my $1.2M house for sale in Perth’s northern suburb of Padbury is on 700 square metres of land, or $1,714 per square metre of house and land. Compare that with property in Thailand, where fully serviced land is about $70 per square metre and house construction costs are cheaper, though not safer, than builders in Perth.

It is the capital of Western Australia, the headquarters of Australia's mining and energy industries, and is often called the most isolated major city in the world.

When is the best time to visit Perth?

Spring (September to November) and autumn (March to May) are the most comfortable times to visit Perth, with warm days and little rain. Spring is wildflower season. Summer (December to February) is hot and dry and best for the beach, while winter (June to August) is mild and wet.

How do I get from Perth Airport to the city?

Perth Airport is about 12 km east of the CBD. The Airport Line train runs from Airport Central station to Perth Station in roughly 20 minutes, and taxis, rideshare and hire cars are available at every terminal. Allow extra time to transfer between the T1/T2 and T3/T4 terminal precincts.

Popular day trips from Perth include Rottnest Island by ferry, the Swan Valley vineyards, Fremantle, Hillarys Boat Harbour and the Sunset Coast beaches, the Perth Hills and Mundaring Weir, and Mandurah, about one hour south. The Margaret River wine region is about three hours' drive south and is better as an overnight trip.

Where can I see kangaroos near Perth?

You can see free-roaming kangaroos close to Perth at Pinnaroo Valley Memorial Park in the northern suburbs and in bushland reserves around the city.
